Beyond the Surface

"People are guarded. They are conditioned to give superficial answers rather than the real ones lying just below the surface." — Where the Wildflowers Grow

We’ve learned to guard our truths, trading vulnerability for the safety of a superficial reply. But in this space, the surface isn't enough. When I ask how you are, I am asking to see the landscape of your life—the parts you keep hidden, the parts you think are "a lot."

Please know that you cannot overwhelm me. I am here to hold the entirety of your experience—exactly as it is.

Often, "How are you?" is my first question to a client. The initial response is almost always "Good." Yet, as the session progresses, the truth is far more complex than that single, automatic word.

I recognize that "good" is often a habit—a social reflex. In our daily lives, we learn that when this question is posed, the asker isn't necessarily seeking a thoughtful, accurate response, nor are they always equipped to hold space for the weight of a deeper answer.

I wonder if this is because our societal norms are built strictly for the surface. It is a curious paradox: "How are you?" is our most common greeting, yet we use it as a closed door rather than an open invitation, whether we are engaging with close friends or the cashier at the grocery store.

Have you ever opened yourself up to someone you believed to be a safe space, only to find that your truth was "too much" for them to hold? That experience is painful, but it is also a reminder of why safe, professional containment is vital. We all deserve to have someone capable of holding everything we are experiencing beneath the surface—without judgment, without flinching, and without needing us to package it into something smaller.

If you have reached a point where you need a space to share more than just the surface, I may be the support you need.

Beyond the surface lies your evolution.
